Capacity Building Program for Prospective Teachers: Enhancing Leadership Skills through the Dodgeball Game

Our recent Capacity Building Program at our college featured an inventive dodgeball game. The game's goal? To give teachers leadership tools they could use in the classroom. We used dodgeball as a metaphor to promote teamwork, critical thinking, and teamwork excellence. This document discusses our dodgeball game and how this approach impacted the participants' leadership and teamwork abilities.

The main aim of incorporating dodgeball into our training program was simple. Let teachers experience leadership, teamwork and defence firsthand. We designed the game to amplify teachers' skill to lead, motivate, communicate effectively, and manage learners.

PLANNING AND ORGANISATION

Running a dodgeball game needs good plans. We followed these main steps:

a. Making Teams: People joined various teams with different skills and experiences. This mix helped everyone work together and share knowledge and thoughts.

b. Setting Rules: Fair, safe rules were made and all people joined in equally. Clear rules helped everyone understand the goals and what was expected.

c. Equipment Gathering: Vital game gear like balls, markers, and safety tools were obtained. We made sure there was extra stuff on hand too.

d. Setting Up: We fixed up a good spot at the college for the game. Factors like space, safety, and easy reach were important. The area was clearly marked to prevent game-time mix-ups.

HOW WE DID IT

We tried our best to create a fun, welcoming space during the dodgeball match. Here's what we did:

a. Pre-Game Meet: Before we started, we had a detailed discussion. We talked about the rules, why we're playing, and what we should do. We also discussed how this game can help build leadership skills.

b. Team Activities: We also did some quick team activities. These helped in teamwork, bonding, and participation. They were planned to help trust and teamwork in the group.

c. Debriefing and Reflection: Post-game, we held a session to talk about what we learned and the tough parts. It was all about linking it to real teacher situations. A big thing was spotting who showed leadership. That happened during playtime.

OUTCOMES AND IMPACTS

The dodgeball match was a big hit. It really boosted the teachers' leadership abilities. Here's what happened:

a. Improved Communication: Everyone talked better while they planned and played the game. This is so important when it comes to sharing details with students and teammates.

b. Teamwork: The teachers did a great job working together. They understood why working as a team matters. This helps build a classroom where everybody learns together.

c. Problem-Solving Skills: The game needed the players to think fast, change when needed, and decide while under stress. This showed how to solve problems well, something that can help when dealing with tough teaching moments.

d. Leadership Development: In the activity, teachers showed they can lead by guiding their group, speaking out, pushing others, and taking on what's thrown at them. These talents are key in making a good place to learn and guide students right.

To conclude, by integrating a dodgeball game into the capacity building program for physical science teachers, remarkable progress was made in their development of leadership skills. The success of this endeavor was evident in the significant improvements in communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and leadership displayed by participants. This innovative approach served as a powerful reminder of the value of incorporating engaging and interactive activities in promoting learning and professional growth among educators.
